Submitting to Dead Oaks: A Horror Anthology Podcast

Dead Oaks: A Horror Anthology Podcast from BronzeCast Productions is now accepting submissions for our bi-weekly (every two weeks) episodes! Basically, how it works is this: chosen stories will be turned into podcast episodes read either by the author or by a Dead Oaks cast member, depending on the author's preference. Also, each story will be published on deadoakspodcast.com with full credit given to the author. However, there are some guidelines. Read them below:

Story Submission Guidelines:

Dead Oaks stories must be:
  • original, unpublished works of short fiction between 2,000 and 5,500 words
    • EDIT: Word count IS negotiable. We recently accepted a story of 912 words because it was AMAZING.
    • EDIT: Dead Oaks will accept reprints of stories so long as the author has legal rights to publish said story. This also applies to stories that have been previously published on forum websites or blogs (i.e. Reddit).
  • submitted in double space, 12 point, sanserif font via Microsoft Word document (or other compatible document)
  • related, in some way of your choosing, to the fictional town of Dead Oaks (more information below)
    • EDIT: It has been asked whether or not the story must be set in the town of Dead Oaks. This is not mandatory, as long as your story isn't explicitly set in a real town or city (like New York, Estes Park, etc.) We at BronzeCast understand you may have already written a story that could fit the criteria, but is not set in a town called Dead Oaks. We still want to consider your story for publication!
  • sent via email to deadoakssubmission@gmail.com
    • No cover letter required

What is Dead Oaks?

In short, Dead Oaks is a small, relatable town of ambiguous location where really, really bad things tend to happen. Whether it be serial killers, demons, ghosts, witches, werewolves, ritual sacrifice, or some other evil deep within the reaches of your imagination, it can and does happen in Dead Oaks. It's up to you to tell the stories unfolding on a daily basis in this mecca of evil.

If you decide to write a Dead Oaks story, just keep in mind...
  • A particular location is never mentioned for Dead Oaks, though feel free to throw in some hometown charm if you want. Just don't use phrases like "Dead Oaks, Idaho" or "a town located in the Pacific Northwest."
  • Horror doesn't have to be supernatural. Though there's plenty of non-human evil in Dead Oaks, there's a lot more going on, too. If supernatural is your thing, go for it, but don't be deterred if you don't usually write about ghosts and monsters.
  • Explicit Sex is off-limits. Dead Oaks isn't about shock value and porn, so keep graphic sex to a minimum. If someone is going to leave the story remembering the sex scene and not the horror, then it probably isn't right for this particular podcast.
  • Dead Oaks isn't a paying market... yet. Here at BronzeCast Productions, we would love to be able to pay for accepted submissions, but until Dead Oaks gets off the ground and gets some funding, we're doing everything out of our own pockets. We'll tweet the hell out of you, but we can't pay at the moment.
Submissions will be open into the foreseeable future, so start writing, and start submitting. We will happily accept multiple submissions from any author. If you have any questions, feel free to send them to: christopher.waltz821@gmail.com

UPDATE: Dead Oaks is now accepting reviews, book promotions, and other horror-related content!

If short stories aren't your thing, Dead Oaks could still be the place for you! Shoot an email to deadoakssubmission@gmail.com with your idea for something else horror-related. Dead Oaks is growing, and we want to begin that stage with our website-only content!

Items you might think about submitting:
  • Horror reviews
    • This might be books, movies, local events, or anything else of the horror genre
  • Book promotions
    • Maybe you have a self or indie-press novel or story coming out and want Dead Oaks to promote it! We're definitely open to the idea and would love to hear what you have coming soon!
  • Event information
    • Maybe there's a local horror event you are involved with or want to spread the word about. If you're willing to write up the information, Dead Oaks is probably willing to promote it!
Again, send your ideas to deadoakssubmission@gmail.com to let us know what you want shown on the website! We'll get back to you (usually) within a week to let you know if it's a good fit!

Cheers!

  1. Would love to submit, and have several stories, but all have been published. Most podcasters accept reprints, and am hoping that at some point you open the doors to non-virgins.
    Regards,
    Ed Ahern
PS Would be happy to narrate and have a decent speaking voice.

  3. I'm definitely looking forward to listening, and submitting when I have something!

You mentioned that you're not looking for stories that have been posted to /r/nosleep, to clarify, does this mean we shouldn't submit anything we've posted there?

    1. The last thing I want to do is get into hot water with Reddit. If you're comfortable with removing your story from /r/nosleep, then I would be more than happy to read and potentially include it in the podcast. I'm perfectly fine with using stories that originated on the forum, but I don't want to infringe on or take anything away from Reddit, if that makes sense.
