Horror Update: The Log House by Baylea Hart

A woman abandoned in a deadly forest is forced to fight for her survival...

Penny does not care about other people. They are necessary only in as far as they are useful, and most are not useful at all.

Getting pregnant, the unplanned side-effect of her affair with a married man, was useful. Having a child meant that she could live in relative peace, safe from the dangers outside a house shared by hundreds. A house that includes the man’s wife, Mary, a woman who watches Penny from the shadows.

When Penny wakes on a makeshift boat careening down a river, head throbbing, she knows Mary is responsibleLeft to the deadly forest that surrounds their home, Penny is forced to navigate her way back to her child, and to Mary, hell-bent on revenge.

But Penny is not alone in the forest. Between the thick trees, inky eyes follow her as she moves. Their smiles growing.

Penny is being hunted, and the only thing that keeps her going is the fiery hatred for Mary, burning in her gut. Until she meets Mia. Forced to aid the mysterious woman before she can find her way home, Penny starts to doubt her motives. Is Mary really as bad as she seems? Or has Penny become so obsessed with the past she is no longer able to see people for what they are

The Log House is a character-driven horror novel about revenge and survival with a morally ambiguous main character, things lurking in the darkness, and a story that spirals ever onward towards the place it all began: the log house.

#BuffySlays20

Hey! Chris here! It’s a little abnormal for www.deadoakspodast.com to deter away from posting things about, well, Dead Oaks, but in light of the twentieth anniversary of TV’s single greatest series—if you’re thinking Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad , we can’t be friends anymore—I decided to devote a post to how Buffy not only helped shape me as a human being in general, but also how it helped shape the very podcast you (might) tune into every two weeks—Dead Oaks! To start things off, I have to let you all know a terrible secret about my childhood: I was a weirdo. It may be hard to believe, but I was the chubby, nerdy kid in the corner of his fourth-grade classroom, reading The Shining and drawing terrible X-Men comics on his notebooks. I was into horror and superheroes while my classmates were into football and… other things I definitely wasn’t into. I never fully felt like I fit in with my peers. Little did I know, a lot of other kids felt that way, too. And on ...

Dead Oaks: "A Dead Oaks Visitor"

A Dead Oaks Visitor By S.H. Mansouri “I wake up in the middle of the night.  The first thing I see is headlights sprayed against the wall. They shoot across the room, you know, like when a car passes by . . . or when someone pulls into the driveway. I’m not expecting company at this hour, I can tell you that for sure.”             “And how do you feel?” asks the woman sitting in a dark brown leather chair. She scribbles across the legal pad resting on her lap. She waits for a reply.             Marvin shuffles on the couch, burrowing deeper into a corner. He squeezes a throw pillow, pulling it up close to his bottom lip, preparing for a scene of horror. His eyes burn a hole into a throw-rug on the floor.             “I feel . . . like I’m on top of a really big roller coaster, one of those towering new ...
